    Standard UK plasterboard sizes

    Before counting fixings it helps to know what one sheet actually is. In the UK the standard plasterboard sheet is 1200 × 2400 mm — that's 8 × 4 ft in old money — covering 2.88 m². You'll also find 1200 × 900 mm and 1200 × 1800 mm 'handy boards' that are lighter and easier to lift solo, and 1200 × 2700 mm sheets for rooms with tall ceilings.

    Thickness is just as important. 9.5 mm board is the standard for ceilings (lighter, easier to hold overhead). 12.5 mm is the standard for walls. Both come in tapered-edge (for skimming or jointing) and square-edge (where you tile over the top or add a skim coat without tape).

    Screw spacing — the actual rule

    The official guidance comes from manufacturer specs (British Gypsum, Knauf) and aligns with BS 8212 for drylining. The rule is simpler than most guides make it:

    Walls: space screws at 200–300 mm centres along each stud. 300 mm is common on walls where the board is resting against the structure; 230 mm is a reliable general-purpose figure if you want a single number. Screw into every stud the board crosses — don't skip intermediate ones.

    Ceilings: tighten up to 150–230 mm centres. The board is fighting gravity rather than leaning against a wall, so it needs more support. Some plasterers fix at 150 mm on ceilings as standard.

    Edge distance: keep screws 10–13 mm in from cut edges (where you've sawn or scored the board) and 13 mm in from bound edges (the factory paper edge). Too close to a cut edge and the gypsum breaks out; too close to a bound edge and you risk splitting the paper, which weakens the fixing.

    How many screws per sheet — worked example

    Take a standard 1200 × 2400 mm wall board on timber studs at 400 mm centres, which is the UK standard stud spacing for plasterboard (600 mm is also common for thicker board or load-bearing walls).

    A 1200 mm wide board at 400 mm stud centres means the board crosses studs at 0, 400, 800 and 1200 mm — so four stud lines: the two edges plus two intermediates. Down the 2400 mm height at 300 mm spacing, that's roughly 9 fixings per stud line (2400 ÷ 300 = 8 spaces = 9 screws, though in practice you start and end slightly in from the board edge).

    4 studs × 9 screws = ~36 raw total. In practice on a wall you often use slightly fewer on intermediate studs and slightly tighter on edges, landing at 25–30 screws for a wall board as a working figure.

    For a ceiling board at 150 mm centres: the same four joist lines, but 2400 ÷ 150 = 16 spaces, ~17 fixing points per joist. That's ~68 raw, but ceiling joist spacing is often 400–600 mm, so with three joist lines: 3 × 17 = ~51, or with tighter 230 mm spacing, about 36 screws per ceiling board — which is the common rule of thumb.

    Screws for a whole room

    The quickest method: work out your sheet count first (the plasterboard calculator handles this), then multiply by 30 screws per wall board or 36 per ceiling board, then add 10% for waste, misses and the screws that strip.

    Worked example: a spare bedroom needing 12 wall boards and 5 ceiling boards. Walls: 12 × 30 = 360. Ceiling: 5 × 36 = 180. Total: 540. Add 10%: 594. Round up and buy a box of 600 or 1000 (a 1000-box from Screwfix or Toolstation is typically £8–£12 and lasts a full room or more, so it's rarely worth buying the smaller pack).

    Which screw length? Single vs double boarding

    The screw needs to penetrate the timber or metal stud by enough to hold. For timber: aim for at least 20 mm of thread into the timber after passing through the board.

    12.5 mm board on timber stud: use 3.5 × 32 mm coarse-thread drywall screws (sometimes called bugle-head screws). This gives 19.5 mm into the timber — borderline, so some drywallers use 38 mm. Either works on a stud wall; 32 mm is standard.

    Double-boarding (2 × 12.5 mm board): you need 3.5 × 42 mm minimum. Two boards = 25 mm of material before you even reach the timber.

    Board to metal stud: use fine-thread self-drilling drywall screws, 25–38 mm. Coarse-thread screws don't grip metal stud properly — the thread pitches are different.

    You'll find both 3.5 × 32 mm and 3.5 × 42 mm coarse-thread drywall screws in boxes of 200 or 1000 at Screwfix and Toolstation. At time of writing a box of 1000 × 3.5 × 32 mm from Screwfix runs around £10–£13.

    The thing most guides get wrong: over-driving

    Most online guides quote a screw count and leave it there. The thing that actually causes callbacks and visible screw pops isn't the count — it's over-driving. Sink the screw too hard and it breaks through the paper face of the board. Once the paper is torn, the screw has nothing solid to grip; it'll hold short-term but often works loose and pops through the skim coat six months later.

    A dryliner I spoke to sets his drywall gun's depth stop so the screw creates a slight dimple in the board surface without tearing the paper. He said a slightly under-driven screw you go back and nip up by hand beats a torn one every time — you can fix an under-driven screw in two seconds; a torn face needs filling, re-skimming, and hoping for the best.

    The other practical point: buy a bigger box than the maths says. Dropped screws on a dusty subfloor are not worth picking up, and you'll strip a few heads on awkward fixings. A 1000-box covers most rooms and the surplus goes in the van for next time.
