Decking Area Calculator
Use this decking area calculator to work out the area of a deck and estimate how much decking may be needed for the space. It is useful for planning timber or composite decking projects before ordering boards, fixings, or sub-frame materials. Enter the deck dimensions used by the tool to get a quick area-based estimate.
Standard: 10%. Max: 30%.

How this calculator works
This calculator works out the total deck area from the dimensions entered. For rectangular decks, it multiplies the length by the width to give the base area. For circular decks, it uses the diameter to calculate the area of the circle. Once the base area is calculated, the tool applies the waste allowance as a percentage to give the total area you will likely need to order. Results are shown in both square metres and square feet regardless of which unit system is selected.
Formulas used
deck area = length × width
deck area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
total area required = deck area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
This tool calculates deck surface area only. It does not estimate board count, board lengths, fixings, or sub-frame quantities.
Worked example
For a rectangular deck, the deck length and width are multiplied to give the base area. For example, a deck that is 5 metres long and 4 metres wide has a base area of 20 m². If a 10% waste allowance is applied, the total area required becomes 20 × 1.10 = 22 m². The tool then displays this as both a metric and an imperial figure. For a circular deck, the diameter is used to calculate the circular area first, and the same waste logic is then applied. The results do not include board counts — use the area figure as a starting point when comparing board sizes and coverage with your supplier.
Why deck area matters
Deck area is the starting point for estimating how many boards and materials a decking project may need. Once the area is known, it is easier to plan coverage, compare board options, and estimate the scale of the build before ordering materials. This tool is for planning and estimating only and does not replace a full deck design or structural layout.
